Why Spiritual Protection is Vital in Islam

In daily life, Muslims encounter physical, emotional, and spiritual challenges. The Quran serves as a divine remedy (Shifa) and a fortress (Hisn) against the evil eye (Ayn), envy (Hasad), witchcraft (Sihr), and satanic whisperings (Waswas).

Allah Almighty says in the Noble Quran: > "And We send down of the Quran that which is healing and mercy for the believers..." (Surah Al-Isra 17:82)

1. The 3 Quls (Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, & An-Nas)

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ specifically instructed: > "Recite Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad and the Mu'awwidhatayn (Al-Falaq and An-Nas) three times in the evening and in the morning, and they will suffice you against everything." (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3575)

  • Surah Al-Ikhlas: Affirms Allah's absolute oneness and sovereignty, purifying intention and faith.
  • Surah Al-Falaq: Seeks refuge from the evil of created beings, darkness when it settles, occult magic, and the malicious envier.
  • Surah An-Nas: Seeks refuge in the Lord of mankind from internal whispers of doubts and negative thoughts cast by devils.

2. Ayatul Kursi (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:255)

Known as the greatest verse in the entire Quran, Ayatul Kursi declares Allah's supreme attributes: the Ever-Living, the Sustainer, neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him.

The Prophet ﷺ said: > "Whoever recites Ayatul Kursi after every obligatory prayer, nothing will stand between him and entering Paradise except death." (Sunan An-Nasa'i, Al-Kubra 9848)

Reciting it before sleep ensures an angelic guardian watches over you until dawn.

3. The Last Two Verses of Surah Al-Baqarah (2:285–286)

Commonly known as Amanar-Rasul, the Prophet ﷺ stated: > "Whoever recites the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah at night, they will suffice him." (Sahih Al-Bukhari 5009)

Scholars explain "suffice him" to mean: they will protect him from all evil, harm, and the schemes of devils throughout the night.

4. Surah Al-Mulk (Chapter 67) for Grave Protection

Protection extends into the afterlife. The Prophet ﷺ taught that Surah Al-Mulk acts as Al-Mani'ah (The Preventer), interceding for the reader and shielding them from the punishment of the grave.

The Daily Sunnah Protection Routine

To establish this protective shield:

  1. After Fajr: Recite the 3 Quls three times.
  2. After Maghrib: Recite the 3 Quls three times.
  3. Before Sleeping:
  • Cup your hands together.
  • Recite Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas.
  • Blow gently into your hands.
  • Wipe over your head, face, and front of your body (repeated 3 times).
