What is Sadqah Jariyah?

Sadqah Jariyah (صدقة جارية) translates to "continuous or ongoing charity." Unlike ordinary one-time charity (which provides immediate assistance to someone in need), Sadqah Jariyah represents a long-term investment that keeps producing benefit for people and generating good deeds for the giver—even long after they have passed away.

The Foundational Hadith

Abu Hurairah (RA) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

"When a human being dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: a continuing charity (Sadaqah Jariyah), knowledge from which benefit is derived, or a righteous child who prays for him."

(Sahih Muslim 1631)

In another profound narration in Sunan Ibn Majah (Hadith 242), the Prophet ﷺ enumerated seven specific types of ongoing rewards:

  1. Knowledge taught and spread
  2. A righteous child left behind
  3. A copy of the Quran (Mushaf) bequeathed
  4. A mosque built
  5. A traveler's lodge built
  6. A canal or water source dug
  7. Charity given from one's wealth during good health

5 Practical Examples of Sadqah Jariyah Today

1. Digging a Water Well or Providing Clean Drinking Water Providing water is described in the Sunnah as the best form of charity. Saad ibn 'Ubadah (RA) asked: "O Messenger of Allah, which charity is best?" The Prophet ﷺ replied: "Giving water." (Sunan An-Nasa'i 3664). Every sip taken by humans, birds, or animals earns continuous rewards.

2. Spreading Authentic Islamic Knowledge (Digital Sadqah) Teaching someone a Surah, explaining a Masnoon Dua, or sharing authentic Islamic resources online. Every time a reader recites Surah Al-Mulk, learns a daily Dua, or teaches their children the Six Kalimas, Allah grants equal reward to the one who shared and enabled that knowledge.

3. Sponsoring a Student of Knowledge or Orphan Supporting an orphan's education and spiritual upbringing ensures that their future good deeds, prayers, and generations echo in your book of deeds.

4. Contributing to a Mosque or Community Center Contributing towards building or maintaining a house of Allah ensures you receive rewards for every prayer, prostration, and Quran recitation performed there.

5. Planting Trees and Fruit-Bearing Plants The Prophet ﷺ said: "Never does a Muslim plant a tree or cultivate farmland and birds, humans, or animals eat from it, but it is regarded as a charity on his behalf." (Sahih Al-Bukhari 2320).
